Helping every player to reach their potential
We have two stated objectives…
- To encourage and promote the game of basketball within the London Borough of Bromley
- To provide an opportunity for players to compete at the highest level
So in everything we do we seek to combine the concepts of inclusivity and excellence.
Maximising Participation
And that’s why we start young, in Year 4. We want as many people as possible to play and fall in love with the game. So we welcome everyone to our open sessions, numbers permitting. Right from those first sessions we focus on the core skills required to play basketball. Whether you go on to conquer the world or just fancy playing social basketball, if you have those core skills, you will be welcome at any club.
And we take that very seriously, with our NBL coaches also taking the younger sessions. Of course, they have a vested interest in developing skilful players for the future so that when they hold the annual trials for the NBL squads, they can be confident of selecting a great team!
We are also committed to promoting basketball in Bromley Schools. We have unique relationships with schools in the borough. Our coaches work with school teams and over the last 5 years, they have been responsible for relaunching and running the Bromley Schools Cup. We are proud of the fact that this year’s enrolments feature players from the widest range of local schools ever. We can’t do this on our own – we need the schools to get involved as well, and we support that.
Excellence
But it’s not enough that lots of people play the game. We want to provide an opportunity to compete at the highest level. We are the only club in Bromley to play at National League level, running Junior NBL teams for U14s, U16s and U18s.
This is the highest level of club basketball in the country, and we are proud to participate in it. Being in an NBL squad is a major commitment, with training twice a week and matches at the weekend, but we believe, and are repeatedly told by parents, that the young players are better for being so active, and are more successful in other parts of their life.
Playing basketball at a high level is good for us physically, but it always provides valuable life lessons. It is a game that rewards practice, and a good team will always beat a couple of talented individuals, so players learn that there is no short cut to success. Sometimes they will experience the joy of winning, but equally they will experience disappointment at times, and learning to deal with that, both individually and as a team, is a massive lesson.
